The MyUniversity website launched by Federal Minister Chris Evans today is welcome but it needs further development, according to the Regional Universities Network (RUN).

The Chair of RUN, Professor David Battersby, said there was little context or information around the data provided on the website and this would be one area for improvement.

"We welcome the website and are optimistic it will be a useful tool for students and their parents," Professor Battersby said.

"But more needs to be done to assist the interpretation of data.

"The data accuracy, particularly as a basis for comparison is problematic. For example, dropout rates reflect students transferring to other courses and institutions as well as those who leave the university system entirely.

"Staff to student ratios do not include contract staff and do not include off-shore staff," Professor Battersby said.

"With multiple users of the site (students, parents, members of the community), navigation of the MyUniversity site is challenging.

"We look forward to working with the department to improve the website and ensure that it develops into a useful tool that complements other public sources of information available about our universities."
