The Regional Universities Network has welcomed the announcement of Professor Sandra Harding, Vice-Chancellor of James Cook University, as Universities Australia's incoming Chair.

The Chair of RUN, Professor David Battersby, said Professor Harding would take on the position at a crucial time for the sector in the lead-up to the 2013 Federal election.

"Professor Harding, as the Vice-Chancellor of a university headquartered in regional Australia, has a strong grasp of the contribution that regional universities make to their communities and the nation, as well as the broader contribution of Australian universities.

"She will make a wonderful contribution to UA and the higher education sector.

"Professor Harding will complement the significant role played by Professor Glyn Davis, the outgoing chair, in the formulation of University Australia first-ever policy document to be announced today."

Professor Harding has been Vice-Chancellor and President of James Cook University since 2007.
